"I am acting as a private citizen, born and raised in Massachusetts. I haven't violated any laws, and I am only informing the public that high-powered corporate lawyers like Deval Patrick are often scofflaws when they work for disreputable companies like Coca-Cola, Texaco and Ameriquest."

So says labor and human rights advocate Ray Rogers, director of the Campaign to Stop Killer Coke, whom gubernatorial hopeful Deval Patrick recently denounced as "a paid public relations consultant from New York" who is now "under investigation by state campaign finance authorities."

"Deval's definition of an investigation is a lot looser than most people's," Rogers said. "The State Office of Campaign and Political Finance simply provided me with its standard form dealing with independent expenditures.

"I am responding today with a detailed explanation of the circumstances that caused me to publish the leaflet, 'Deval the Fee Hugger,' " Rogers added. "People can look into my activities as much as they like, but I'm not running for governor. It's really Mr. Patrick who needs to be scrutinized."
